# What are the most common number in roulette?

Last updated: 01.14.2023 by Chris Mwangi

Roulette is a game of chance, but if you play long enough, you may find that some numbers come out more than others. So, is this a statistical deviation, or is it possible to develop a strategy by determining the most common numbers in roulette? Is it pure luck, or can you really define the most winning roulette numbers? Keep reading to find out the answer!

## How do random number generation and number predictors work?

All gamblers know how many numbers on roulette: it is 37 or 38, depending on the variant you play. This means that each spin can have 37 or 38 different outcomes. This also shows why the answer to what is the highest number on a standard roulette wheel? A question can differ, it can be 37 or 38.

Online roulette games use RNG (random number generator) software to determine the result. This software assigns a numerical value to each possible outcome and generates a random number, displaying the corresponding numerical value. In land-based or live dealer roulette games, pure luck determines the outcome.

Some “roulette number generator” software on the market tries to detect the most common roulette patterns by tracking hot and cold numbers and gives you a recommendation on what your next bet should be. However, as we will point out below, this can be misleading because the "hot" and "cold" numbers are actually a gambler's fallacy.

## Hot and cold roulette numbers: What are their meanings?

The most common way to predict winning roulette numbers is to follow the hot and cold numbers. Most online casinos display what these numbers are in the game interface. The main purpose here is to detect the lucky numbers for roulette. In this context:

• “Hot” are the top numbers that come out in the last 24 hours or 500 spins,
• “Cold” are the numbers that come out the least in the same period.

Most gamblers believe that hot numbers have a higher chance of winning. Some gamblers, on the contrary, think that cold numbers are more likely to come out because they have not been out for a long time – this means their odds are increased. Both ideas have no scientific basis and are known as “gambler's fallacy”.

This simply means an unfounded belief. If you spin the roulette wheel for 24 hours, some numbers will indeed come out more, but this is just a statistical deviation and does not make those numbers "hot". Because, as we will explain below, all possibilities are reset at each spin, they do not increase or decrease.

### What is the normal heat index?

If you calculate it mathematically, spinning a 37-number wheel 300 times will display each number approximately 8 times. But if you use a roulette simulator, you'll actually find that some numbers are more common than others, and some are less. In almost every simulation done to date, some numbers have come up 14 times, and some have come up only 3 times. So, does this really answer the question of what numbers hit the most in roulette?

The short answer is no. Some numbers do indeed come out more than others, but these numbers are variable: you'll see different numbers come out more with each simulation. In the long run, you may find that some numbers never change after thousands of simulations, but this is just a statistical anomaly: they do not represent the most common roulette numbers.

This is because players cannot understand that all probabilities are reset on each spin. For example, let's spin a wheel 100 times: if the result was black 10 times in a row, the probability of getting red on the 11th spin is increased, right? If you say “yes” to this, you are wrong: the probability of getting black or red on the 11th spin is still 50%. For example, on August 18, 1913, in a casino in Monte Carlo, black came out 26 times in a row, and countless gamblers went bankrupt.

## Most and least popular numbers in roulette

Therefore, there is no clear answer to the question of what number hits the most in roulette: as long as you keep spinning the wheel, the most hit number in roulette will also constantly change. However, it is possible to say that some numbers are more preferred than others, that is, they are more popular. There are many reasons for this popularity: below, we list the most popular numbers in roulette and briefly explain why they are preferred.

## Lucky numbers in roulette

• 17 Black: This is the choice of Mr. James Bond and Mike Ashley, as we will explain below.
• 7 Red: Seven is considered a lucky number in almost all ancient cultures.
• 8 Black: This is the only positive Fibonacci number.
• 11 Black: The number eleven is associated with spirituality.
• 23 and 24: 23 is considered lucky because of the “Law of Fives”, which says all good things happen in fives. And 2 + 3 is 5. 24, on the other hand, is the luckiest number in numerology; it is associated with luck and wealth.

For many players, these are the best numbers in roulette. Mike Ashley, the owner of the Newcastle Football Club, believes that 17 is the safest number in roulette, and he tested this theorem by placing a series of bets of more than £480,000 on this number. He managed to win £1.3m in one of these games.

## Unlucky numbers?

• 13 Black: Thirteen is considered an unlucky number in many parts of the world.
• 0 Green: This is the house number – it belongs to the casino. While you can still bet on it, trying your luck with the casino’s number is considered unlucky.
• 00 Green: Same reason as 0 green: 00 green is the house pocket in American roulette.
• 6 black: All Christians know why this number is “cursed”: add two more sixes, and you get the “devil’s number”.
• 34 Red: This number has the worst placement on the wheel, and, for some reason, it is always one of the cold numbers.

## What are the best roulette numbers to play?

We explained that there is no specific answer for what number comes up the most in roulette question: it really depends on luck. One of the reasons players can't believe it is the “law of large numbers”. This law indicates that the number of times a random event will occur stabilizes after many trials. So, if you sit down and do 10,000 spins in a roulette simulator, for example, you might see Red 7 come out more, but that doesn't mean Red 7 is the most common roulette number: it just means you keep spinning until a statistical anomaly occurs.

However, this does not mean that some roulette betting options are not better than others. Let's try to explain it simply: in roulette, you can bet on a single number or multiple numbers. The more numbers you bet on, the higher your chances of winning. In other words, it doesn't matter which numbers you pick: what matters is that your bet covers multiple numbers. The more your bet covers the 37/38 numbers on the wheel, the better your chances of winning. Check out our Roulette Odds Calculator to test the best combinations of roulette numbers.

Let us explain this in more detail by giving some examples.

### Betting the Rest Has Small Probabilities of Hitting

Let's say you are playing European roulette, and you place a straight bet. This means betting on a single number. What are your chances of winning? Calculating this is actually pretty easy:

• There are 37 numbers on the wheel.
• You bet on only one of these numbers. This can be represented mathematically as 1/37.
• 1/37 = 0.0270, that is 2.70%.
• This means you have a 2.70% chance of winning a straight bet.

The formula is always the same: you divide the number(s) covered by your bet by the numbers on the wheel. For example, let's say you place a neighbour's bet: it covers five numbers. So, the formula would be:

• 5/37 = 0.1351 (13.51%)

## What Is the Best Bet on the Roulette Table?

Now you understand why your chances of winning increase when your bet covers many numbers. The best example of this is “even money” bets. All these bets pay 1:1 but offer the best chance of winning. In this regard, it is possible to say that they are the best bet for roulette. Even money bets are:

• Red
• Black
• Odd
• Even
• Low
• High

All these bets cover a total of 18 numbers. The numbers they cover are different, but as we mentioned above, that's not the point – the important thing is that they include as many outcomes as possible. In this context, your chances of winning for all these bets will be:

• 18/37 = 0.4864 (48.64%)

## Playing Split Numbers in Roulette

But the bets that have the highest chance of winning are also those that pay the lowest. A straight bet, for example, pays 37:1 but offers the lowest chance of winning. Split bets can offer more satisfactory odds in this regard. This is a type of bet unique to French roulette, also known as "chival". It means betting on two numbers at the same time, and any two adjacent numbers can be chosen. A split bet pays 17:1 and offers the following chance to win:

• 2/37 = 0.0540 (5.40%)

## Summary

There is no such thing as the most common numbers on roulette: this is just a superstition. However, there are the most popular roulette numbers, and you can choose any of them if you like. While they won’t affect the outcome in any way, you can have more fun with them – as long as you are having fun, you can pick any number you like. That being said, remember that choosing a bet type is more important than finding the most repeated numbers in roulette: the right bet can actually increase your winning chance. Good luck out there!
