Can You Play at CO Online Casinos?

The short answer is no, you cannot: There are no online casinos in Colorado. While there are legal gambling options, CO online casinos are not one of them. To explain the reason, we need to take a short trip into the past and talk about the history of gambling in Colorado. This state used to be one of the regions where gambling was most prevalent in the past because, during the “Gold Rush” period, there was a saloon almost everywhere. Gambling was the most common hobby, and some of the legendary names in poker (for example, Ben Thompson and Doc Holliday) originated in Colorado. However, many gambling-related crimes were also committed during this period, and therefore all forms of gambling were strictly prohibited in the early 1900s.

This did not change until 1990, but land-based casinos became legal in 1991 as a result of lobbying by casino operators. Unfortunately, this legalization was subject to many restrictions. For example:

  • Casinos are only allowed to open in three districts (Black Hawk, Central City, and Cripple Creek).
  • The maximum bet limit on all games is set at $5.

In 2009, the bet limit was increased to $100, but geo-restrictions still remain. The only exception is tribal casinos: Indian tribes can offer gambling services without these restrictions, as they are subject to their own laws in their own territory. However, in other parts of the state, places where casinos can be opened, and the maximum bet amount are strictly limited.

In this context, there are 9 casinos in Colorado apart from tribal casinos. All of them work 24/7 and can serve alcohol. Moreover, they look much nicer compared to casinos in other states: they are all built on the edge of the forests and surrounded by natural beauty. Since they are also a hotel, they can attract the attention of even tourists who are not interested in gambling.

Among these regions, Cripple Creek is the most promising one: most revenue comes from casinos in this region, and big brands such as MGM and Bally's have been lobbying for more casinos to open here for a long time. In the near future, the number of land-based casinos in Colorado could increase even more.

We also have good news for sports betting: In 2019, Colorado legalized sports betting and does not differentiate between online and offline wagers. In other words, you can bet using both online sites, mobile applications, and casinos. In this regard, sports betting services are only offered by casinos in Colorado, as in other states, but require an additional license. There is no such requirement for pari-mutuel betting, this type of bets can be placed in racetracks as well. Currently, Colorado may be the state with the most mobile betting apps as it has been allowing them since May 2020. Everything related to gambling within the state borders is controlled by the Colorado Limited Gaming Control Commission. This is a five-person council and deals not only with casino & betting licenses, but also with lottery and charity organizations.

All of this is good news, of course, but when it comes to playing online roulette Colorado, we, unfortunately, have to share some bad news. Colorado has limited online gambling to sports betting only and does not allow online casinos. This means that it is not possible to open a casino site within state borders. Fortunately, out-of-state casino sites are not affected by this ban: players from Colorado can play at any online casino they like. But to get the best possible experience, you should play at the best casinos: that's why we've compiled the list in this guide. Each of the casinos we recommend offers Colorado players an enjoyable and rewarding experience.

Table Games

You can choose land-based or tribal casinos to play table games: Both have many variants of roulette. Note that state casinos still have a betting limit: if you want to play with no limits, you should go to tribal casinos. However, as we mentioned above, online table games are not a part of this experience: play online roulette for real money, you have to choose internet casinos. Since we already listed the best sites to do this, you can start spinning the wheel in no time: Pick one of them right now and start playing.

Slot Machines

Slot machines are only available in casinos. Colorado state and tribal casinos have over 2,000 slot machines and you can play them at any time you want as long as you are over 21. However, due to the low total number of casinos, do not expect much variety: most of these games will be the same. If you want variety in slot games, you should choose online casinos. Casino sites have a lot more options in terms of themes, payout range, bet limits, jackpots, and paylines, and you don't have to leave your home to play them.

Lottery and Bingo

Let's start with bingo, keno, and other instant win games: Colorado law allows these games to be included in a charity event. However, there is an interesting situation here: Charity events involving gambling can only be held in casinos. These are called “casino nights” and land-based casinos are also allowed to sponsor these events. The only requirement here is that the games included in the event cannot payout real money (and cannot accept real money bets). While playing the game, people can choose to donate to the organization that organized the event. In other words, there is no such thing as giving the income from the games to the organization: This is not allowed.

The lottery is also legal since 1982 and has a mobile application too. This lottery, called Colorado Lotto+, pays out over $10 million almost every time. The lottery commission is also authorized to issue scratch cards and instant win games (i.e., Cash 5, Pick 3). Colorado is a part of the Powerball and Mega Millions lottery networks as well.

Poker

To play poker, you have no choice but to play at land-based casinos. There are no card rooms in Colorado, but you can find special poker rooms in casinos that cater to different bankrolls. However, let's also point out that there is a kind of legal loophole here: Colorado laws allow “social gambling”. This term refers to a type of gambling where no one except the players can benefit from the profits made. To put it simply, you can get together with your friends and play poker for real money: There is no legal obstacle to this, as long as you share the income at the end of the game only among yourself. This means that all casino games, including poker, can be played in non-profit gaming rooms. Online poker is still an option, but as we mentioned above, it is only offered by internet casinos.

Land Based Casinos

The Ute Mountain tribe has the right to live according to their own laws on the land reserved for them in Colorado due to federal laws. The tribe also uses this right for opening land-based casinos. There are currently two tribal casinos in Colorado: one in Ignacio and the other in the Towaoc area. These are not central areas, but tribal casinos have one important advantage: they are not subject to the $100 max bet limit of state casinos. Since these businesses are not regulated by the Colorado Limited Gaming Control Commission, they do not need to limit their bets. Therefore, we can say that they offer a more satisfying experience.

State casinos, on the other hand, are not allowed to open anywhere other than three geographical regions, as we mentioned above. Colorado tried to keep the casinos as far away from its center as possible when making this decision, but this actually provided an advantage: All of these casinos are located in the state's most beautiful natural areas and attract not only gamblers but also tourists. However, due to their maximum bet limits, they may not be a good choice for high rollers.

Conclusion

Colorado offers many options for gambling, but unfortunately, online services are not included. You cannot play roulette or other casino games unless you travel to the Black Hawk, Central City, and Cripple Creek areas. However, there is, of course, an exception to this: By choosing internet casinos, you can play any game you want online from wherever you want. Colorado laws do not restrict this, and you don't have to bother looking for the best casinos for this job: we've already selected them for you. You can choose any casino from the list in this guide, become a member, and start playing roulette today with an advantageous bonus. You can be sure that this will be a fun and rewarding experience: good luck!
