Guide to Roulette Gambling Sites for NY players
If you want to play roulette in NY online casinos, there are some things you need to know. One of them is that online gambling is currently limited to sports betting in New York and NY casinos online do not exist: There are no casino sites that offer online services within the state borders. But there is something more important to know: If you know what to do, you can still play online roulette in New York and take advantage of amazing bonuses. In this guide, we'll walk you through how to do this and tell you everything you need to know about gambling in New York. As always, let's first start with a list of the best casinos to play online roulette New York: You can choose one from the list below and start playing in less than 10 minutes with a very advantageous welcome bonus.
Legal Status of NY Casinos Online
Now you know which casinos are the best for playing online roulette in New York, so we can start talking about legal gambling options in this state. New York is one of the US states where gambling is most common, but until 2013, the only legal options were state-run lotteries and horse racing betting. Also, land-based casinos were allowed in Indian territories, but this was required by federal law. There were no legal gambling options other than these.
In 2013, the people of New York voted to make land-based casinos legal through a referendum. However, their number would be limited: The legislative change allowed a maximum of seven casinos to be opened within the state. Do not confuse them with Indian casinos: Tribal casinos have been serving in their autonomous regions for years already. The legal change also allowed private companies to open a casino within the borders of New York. In 2019, sports betting was also made legal: We will give more information about this below.
Currently, both these casinos and sports betting services are regulated and licensed by the NY Gaming Commission. Unfortunately, the legislative changes do not cover NY online casinos: Online gambling is only possible for sports betting with some limitations. But even if NY casinos online are not available, the internet offers countless options for playing roulette and other games. Current NY laws do not have a provision that prohibits players from playing on offshore sites, so you can choose any site you want and start playing right now. But if you want to find the best among so many options, just take a look at the list in our guide: we've already selected them for you.
We have good news in terms of sports betting. In April 2021, a change was made to The New York State Legislature and online betting became legal. But this wasn't an easy task: New York had actually made sports betting legal in 2019, but the law contained a rather peculiar statement: Bets could only be placed in the designated part of a licensed casino to a real person. So, it was not possible to place bets online: for this job you had to find a casino, go to the sports betting section of the casino, and hand over your bet slip to the person working there "physically".
There has been a lot of criticism that this was pointless, weird, and against the Legislature. According to New York law, it was not necessary to physically deliver the bet slip to a real person for a contract to be formed between the bettor and the bookie. Betting already meant signing a contract in itself and slip delivery could be done by any method, including online.
In April 2021, Legislature changed once again, and online sports betting became legal, as current laws allow legal obligations to be fulfilled online as well. But it is still subject to some rules:
- For online betting to be legal, the bettor must be in New York at the time of the wager. Even if you live in New York, your bet will not be accepted if you are in another state while making the wager.
- The person or company that will offer the online betting service must have a land-based casino license and host the servers to be used for this business in that casino. In other words, it is not possible to obtain a separate license for sports betting: you have to possess a casino license, betting is seen as an extension of this license.
- A maximum of two operators can offer sports betting services within the borders of New York. This means that only two of the casino owners, that is, the persons authorized to offer the betting service, can become online bookmakers. Bidding is held to determine who these two people will be.
You can play roulette and other table games at land-based casinos in New York. As we will explain below, these are available at both state casinos and Indian casinos. Since none of these businesses can offer their services online, you should choose offshore casino sites for online roulette and other games: we have listed the best ones for you above.
There is a special case for poker: In New York, as in other states, there are card rooms, but they are not supervised in any way. You can use these rooms for poker and other card games, but most of them do not allow you to play for real money. New York has also long sought to legalize online poker. A law currently under approval allows operators to offer online poker services for a $10 million license fee. However, this law has not yet come into force and only covers poker.
You can play slot machines in New York, but just like table games, you are only allowed to do so in land-based casinos. It is not possible to play online slots except for social gaming alternatives. There are over 1,000 slot machines available at land-based casinos within the state borders, and you can find more at tribal casinos. However, NY casinos cannot compete with Las Vegas in terms of variety, as there is a 37% to 45% tax on slot games. (This tax is only 10% for other games.) This causes casinos not to focus too much on slot machines due to low profit rates.
Lottery & Bingo
Lottery and bingo have long been legal in New York. Both were banned before 1966, but the people of New York changed the law, making them legal in a referendum (with a 60% majority) held that same year. The New York Lottery has been held since 1967 and is considered one of the largest lotteries in the United States. Anyone over the age of 18 can join the lottery and there is no requirement to live in New York: You can even buy tickets from a different state. Every retailer authorized to sell tickets for the NY lottery also sells Powerball and Mega Millions tickets.
Bingo games can be organized by both state and private individuals/companies. However, only charity and religious organizations are allowed. If you have such a purpose, you can organize a bingo game yourself, with permission from the NY Gaming Commission.
Land Based Casinos
As we mentioned above, seven casinos are allowed within the borders of New York and the licenses of these casinos are sold by auction. So far, four licenses have been purchased, while the remaining three are waiting for their owners. The license lasts for 10 years, but there is a fee that varies between $25 million and $75 million each year (depending on the size and location of the business). Those are pretty high numbers, so it's no surprise that only four of the licenses have found buyers: even opening a casino in Las Vegas can be cheaper. There is no restriction in terms of the games that can be offered in the casinos: You can find many games such as slot machines, roulette, blackjack, and poker.
The second option in terms of land-based casinos is the Indian casinos that have been in service for years. These are businesses established by the Indian Gaming Regulatory Act of 1988. This Act ensures that Indian tribes in the United States can live on their land according to their own legal regulations. All of these tri bes prefer to legalize gambling and set up their own casinos because of the high and fast profit rates.
There are three tribes in New York: the Seneca tribe controls casinos in the Niagara and Buffalo area. Mohawks are active in the Hogansburg area. The Oneida tribe owns their own casino resort in the Verona region. In total, there are seven tribal casinos in New York. To summarize, there are 11 land-based casinos in New York as of 2021, and seven of them are owned by Indian tribes. To play legal casino games, they are your only option. Of course, you can also opt-in for online gambling, which has no borders. To be honest, we recommend this option: Playing roulette and other casino games from the comfort of your home is a much more enjoyable experience and we already picked the best websites for it.
